SunCoast Market Co-op, a grassroots initiative in Imperial Beach, is nearing the opening of San Diego County's second co-op grocer after nearly a decade of effort. The store has raised $3.6 million from various sources, including grants, donations, and 1,370 owners, but needs an additional $300,000 to open, potentially in the fall. It aims to address the community's lack of healthy food options and will focus on sourcing products from local farmers, with plans to support 40-50 local farms year-round.
SunCoast is aligned with the National Co+op Grocers (NCG), gaining merchandising and marketing support. The store will be a full-service grocer, offering produce, dairy, meat, seafood, prepared foods, and local goods, with a focus on organic and affordable products. SunCoast aims to support small businesses, farmers, and the local economy while providing consistent outlets for small farms. The store will also feature bulk food options, a refill station, and a community space with seating.
The co-op's membership model includes owner benefits like discounts and the ability to vote on store decisions. While profitability is a goal, the primary mission is community service and local support. SunCoast plans to hire 30 employees and aims to be a key player in the region's local food network.
